Students actively guide and support peers, model the academy's values in action, and begin living out leadership as a daily practice.
What It Means to Lead
Leadership is Purpose in Action. It is the full integration of everything a student has developed from white belt through brown belt, expressed outward through service to others. At the red belt, students are no longer just developing their own character. They are actively contributing to the character of the people around them.
Red belt students take on real leadership responsibility. They assist coaches, mentor younger students, help peers work through problems, and make the learning environment better for everyone in it. They do this not because they are told to, but because they have internalized the responsibility that comes with being someone others look to.
Two observable traits define the red belt: Mentorship and Influence. Mentorship means actively supporting others in their growth, sharing knowledge and encouragement without doing the work for them. Influence means shaping the room through consistent behavior, high standards, and the example of how they show up every day. A red belt student does not have to say a word to lead. Their presence and their actions do it.

The Traits Students Practice
Mentorship
Red belt students actively support the growth of peers and younger students. They share knowledge, offer encouragement, and help others work through challenges without doing it for them. Effective mentorship means asking the right question, not giving the right answer.
Influence
Students shape the culture of the room through consistent modeling. The way they respond to challenges, treat peers, and carry themselves sets a tone that others notice and absorb. Influence is not authority. It is the effect of consistent, visible character over time.
Service
Red belt students orient their effort toward the group's success, not just their own. They notice what the team needs, fill gaps without being asked, and make the experience better for everyone. Service leadership is the clearest visible expression of the Leadership pillar.
What Students Build
Core Project
Red belt students complete a high-complexity technical project while simultaneously supporting peers in their work. Their own project must demonstrate sustained excellence. But the evaluation does not end there. Coaches observe how the student contributed to others' growth during the same period, and whether they can articulate that contribution.
Lab Tech Leadership
Red belt students are active participants in the Lab Tech Leadership Pathway. They assist coaches during sessions, mentor younger students through their belt journey, and help peers troubleshoot projects. This is where Mentorship and Influence are most visible and most consistently evaluated by coaches.
What Promotion Requires
Red belt promotion is about demonstrated leadership that elevates others. Coaches look for students who actively contribute to the growth of peers, model the academy's values consistently, and make the learning environment better through their presence. A student who performs at a high level but does not invest in others has not yet demonstrated red belt leadership. Coaches evaluate Mentorship and Influence across many sessions and many types of interaction before recommending advancement.
Actively mentors at least one younger or newer student through a challenge without doing the work for them.
Shapes the room culture through consistent modeling that other students notice and respond to.
Contributes to Lab Tech activities and can reflect on how their support affected someone else's growth.
Maintains their own high performance standard while actively investing in the success of others.
Demonstrates the full integration of Relationships, Responsibility, and Purpose in how they lead every single day.
