"What have you tried?" should precede every hint you give.
The Advanced Coach works with students at the Creator stage, advanced 3rd–5th graders and students in grades 6–8. These students are building independently, working under real pressure, and developing the capacity to own their mistakes before anyone catches them.
Your mode is coaching and restraint. You shift from guiding to asking. Your job is to create the conditions for passion, integrity, self-control, and sportsmanship to emerge through genuinely hard work, and then name exactly what you see.

Grades: Advanced 3rd–5th + Grades 6–8

Every session, every student
Ask Before You Tell
"What have you tried?" precedes every hint. Students at this stage can reason through problems if given the space. Your restraint is more valuable than your answer.
Coach Integrity Under Pressure
Complex builds and competitive contexts create real pressure. Integrity is visible when students own their errors without being caught. Watch for it. Name it when it happens. Address it immediately when it does not.
Develop Independent Builders
Students at this stage should be improving their work without being prompted. Coach Passion through initiative. When a student rebuilds without being asked, that moment matters. Name it.
Support Competition Preparation
Advanced students may prepare for coding and robotics competitions. The character coaching does not change in competition contexts. If anything, Self-Control and Sportsmanship become more critical.
Advance Students to Blue and Purple
Evaluate Blue and Purple belt readiness with equal weight on technical achievement and character demonstrated under real conditions. A belt earned here means something.
Identify Lab Tech Candidates
Students approaching the Leader stage who demonstrate consistent character and technical capability may be ready for the Lab Tech pathway. Surface these students to the Lead Coach with specific observations.
The Coach type
Technical comfort with code and robotics
Students at this stage are writing real programs and building functional machines. You need genuine comfort with the work they are doing, not expertise, but enough fluency to ask the right questions.
Disciplined restraint
Solving the problem for the student feels helpful. It is not. The hardest thing you will do is watch a middle-schooler struggle with something you could fix in 30 seconds and wait.
Credible with older students
10–14 year olds have a finely tuned sense for adults who are performing rather than coaching. You need to be someone they take seriously, direct, consistent, and genuinely interested in them.
You can name integrity in the moment
You recognize when a student is being honest about their work versus avoiding accountability and you can respond to both in real time, without a lecture and without letting it go.
