Prepare: Where Excellence Becomes a Standard

Students demonstrate the consistency, reliability, and self-leadership required before they earn the right to lead others.

Belt Identity

What It Means to Prepare

The brown belt is the threshold of leadership. Students are entering the Leader stage, and the first question every leader must answer is: are you ready? The brown belt is where that answer gets proven. Not through a single impressive moment, but through the accumulated weight of consistent, excellent performance over time.

Preparation for leadership means demonstrating self-leadership first. Brown belt students are expected to be the most reliable, most consistent, and most prepared students in the room. They do not require reminders. They do not have off days that drag the room down. They bring their best, every class, across every type of activity. That standard is what earns the right to lead others.

Coaches observe brown belt students with a specific lens: is this student ready to be a model for others? Would I trust this student to help guide a white belt? If the answer is not yet clearly yes, the student is still preparing. The brown belt is not a waiting room. It is the final stage of becoming someone others can follow.

I Prepare. I Hold the Standard. I Ready Myself to Lead.

The Traits Students Practice

Leadership

Self-Leadership

Brown belt students manage themselves at the highest level. They arrive prepared, stay focused, follow through on commitments, and maintain their standards without external accountability. Self-leadership is the prerequisite for leading others, and it must be proven before the next step.

Leadership

Consistency

Students demonstrate the same high standard across every session, every project type, and every environment. Coaches observe whether students are consistent performers or peak performers. The difference matters. A leader others depend on cannot have off days that undermine the group.

Leadership

Readiness

Students are actively preparing to take on responsibility for others. Coaches look for early evidence of mentorship instinct: students who notice when a peer is struggling, who support without taking over, and who make the room better without being asked.

Builder Skills

What Students Build

Core Project

Brown belt students complete a high-complexity independent build that demonstrates mastery of their technical skills at the highest level of the Creator stage. The project must show consistent, excellent execution across all phases: planning, building, testing, and presenting. It is the capstone of everything they have developed from white through purple.

Application Project

Students take on a supporting role in a mixed-belt session or team activity, assisting peers without doing the work for them. Coaches observe how students help, how they communicate, and whether they elevate others while maintaining their own high performance standard. This is the beginning of the Lab Tech Leadership Pathway.

Advancement

What Promotion Requires

Brown belt promotion is about proving readiness to lead. Coaches look for students who have demonstrated sustained excellence across every dimension: technical skill, character, consistency, and the early habits of leadership. A single great performance does not earn this promotion. Consistent, reliable, high-character performance over an extended period is what advancement requires.

1

Demonstrates consistent, high-quality independent performance across multiple sessions and project types.

2

Manages themselves without requiring external reminders, redirection, or accountability structures.

3

Supports a peer in a meaningful way without taking over the work or undermining their independence.

4

Maintains high standards during challenging, competitive, or high-pressure environments.

5

Has demonstrated that they are someone newer students can look to as a model of how to show up.

You cannot lead others until you can consistently lead yourself. Brown belt is where that proof is built.
